Our Program Approach - Australia

The Santos Foundation is expanding its work in Australia with a new Health program focused on practical, community-led initiatives that improve daily wellbeing and long-term health outcomes for Aboriginal communities.

Building on experience in Papua New Guinea and guided by locally identified priorities, the Foundation began expanding into health-related programs in late 2025. This new focus recognises that reliable access to basic hygiene and health support services plays a critical role in preventing disease, strengthening dignity and supporting healthier futures for individuals, families and communities.

Program Spotlight

Community-led hygiene and wellbeing solutions

One of the Foundation’s first investments under this new Health focus is the Community Laundry Program, delivered in partnership with the Barossa Aboriginal Future Fund (BAFF) and the Aboriginal Investment Group (AIG).
Through this initiative, new free, culturally safe community laundries are being established in Wurrumiyanga (Tiwi Islands) and Yarrawonga (Palmerston), alongside continued support for an existing service in Casuarina (Darwin). These facilities provide reliable access to washing machines and hot water, essential services that many Australians take for granted but are not always available in remote and urban Aboriginal communities.
Access to clean clothing and bedding is an evidence‑based way to reduce preventable infections and diseases, including Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease. By addressing these everyday health needs, the program supports stronger health outcomes while helping communities maintain dignity and independence.

Creating opportunity alongside better health

In addition to improving health and hygiene, the Community Laundry Program also creates local employment opportunities. Across the three Northern Territory locations, the initiative is expected to support up to 21 local jobs, ensuring communities benefit both socially and economically from the program.
This approach reflects the Santos Foundation’s commitment to holistic, place‑based solutions. recognising that health, employment and community wellbeing are deeply connected.
