Hela Province is taking a major step towards improving its healthcare system with the swearing-in of a new Provincial Health Authority (PHA) Board. Supported by Santos and the Santos Foundation, this milestone reinforces strategic leadership and governance to enhance health services in the province.
The board was officially sworn in on February 3, 2025, in Port Moresby, highlighting good governance and oversight as key priorities in strengthening the country’s health sector. Its establishment aims to improve healthcare delivery, address critical health challenges, and drive better health outcomes for the people of Hela.
As a key development partner, Santos Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to healthcare in Hela with the appointment of Brett Darley, Santos Executive Vice President, Eastern Australia and Papua New Guinea, as Chair of the newly sworn-in Hela PHA Board.
Mr. Darley’s appointment reflects Santos and Santos Foundation’s shared vision for long-term, sustainable healthcare and aligns with Santos Vision 2040: “to help create a better world for everyone”. This partnership will drive impactful and lasting improvements in healthcare services.
Hela PHA CEO, Dr. James Kintwa, welcomed the new board, stating: “Stronger partnerships lead to better healthcare outcomes. The leadership of the new Hela PHA Board, alongside the continued support of Santos Foundation, will contribute to a more effective health system for our people.”
Newly appointed Board Chair, Brett Darley, reinforced this commitment: “Through Santos Foundation, Santos is dedicated to investing in partnerships that help communities thrive. Today’s swearing-in of the Hela PHA Board is a testament to our longstanding collaboration with the Hela PHA to enhance healthcare services. Together, we will ensure critical health programs continue making a real difference.”

With renewed leadership and collaboration, Hela’s healthcare system is set for transformation—delivering quality and accessible health services to benefit communities for generations to come.
